Decomposition Of Ozone By Chain Reaction
Decomposition Of Ozone By Chain Reaction |
Here we will go through the kinetics of chain reaction of ozone. Below we can see a general equation of decomposition of ozone along with the chain reactions that occurs. We can see that unlike reaction between hydrogen and bromine the decomposition of ozone occurs in three major steps only; initiation , propagation and termination.
For oxygen [O], the net rate will be equal to the difference of of the rate of formation and rate of decomposition of oxygen.
As, 0 so, k1 [O3] = k2[O2][O] + k3 [O3][O]
Taking [O] common k1 [O3] = (k2[O2] + k3 [O3]) [O]
Now putting the value of [O] in eq.22.1 we got
Taking LCM of first two values,
The step 3 is slow as compared to step so,
k2 [O2] + k3 [O3] ≈ k2 [O2]
Eq.22.4 is the rate equation for the decomposition of ozone by chain reaction.
