Types of Reactions
1. Elementary
reactions
2. Complex
reactions
1.Elementary
reactions: The reactions
which completes in single steps are called elementary reactions. E.g. formation
of Nitrogen oxide.
They can be
Unimolecular, bimolecular and so on.
2. Complex
reactions: The
reactions which completes in several steps are complex reactions.
Or
Reactions accompanied
by other reactions are complex reactions.
Types of
Complex reactions
i.
Opposing reactions
ii.
Parallel reactions
iii.
Consecutive reactions or Chain reactions
iv.
Surface catalyzed reactions

Types of
opposing reactions
Opposing reactions
are further of four types:
i.
1st order opposed by 1st
order
Rate of
forward reaction (Rf) is 1st order. Rate of backward reaction (Rb)
is 1st order.
ii.
1st order opposed by 2nd
order
Rate of
forward reaction (Rf) is 1st order. Rate of backward reaction (Rb)
is 2nd order.
iii.
2nd order opposed by 1st
order
Rate of
forward reaction (Rf) is 2nd order. Rate of backward reaction (Rb) is 1st
order.
iv.
2nd order opposed by 2nd order
Rate of
forward reaction (Rf) is 2nd order. Rate of backward reaction (Rb)
is 2nd order.
Other
types of opposing reaction:
i.
Reactions having no initial products
ii.
Reactions having initial products
Types of
parallel reactions
Parallel reactions
has similar types as order of reactions. They can be
i.
1st order type parallel reactions.
ii.
2nd order type parallel reactions with same
initial concentration
iii.
2nd order type parallel reactions with different
initial concentration and so on.
